From great apes and swingin' monkeys to the world's largest lizards, the Denver Zoo will provide a heady dose of animal attractions. The zoo was unofficially launched in 1896 when the Mayor of Denver was presented with a brown bear as a gift. Today, the Denver Zoo is the fourth most visited zoo in America. It's also one of the most diverse, with more than 4000 animals and 685 species.
The re-creation of natural habitats is paramount at the Denver Zoo. It provides the sensation of being in the wild, while also allowing you to learn more about the animals' natural surroundings.
One such attraction is the Primate Panorama Exhibit. It is home to 25 species of primates from tiny squirrel monkeys to the gigantic lowland gorilla Koundu, who at 619 pounds is the largest gorilla in captivity.
When you've had your fill of watching the primates lounging about and swinging around, check out the Primate Camera that lets you mix and match your face with the features of your favorite primates.
Another popular attraction is Tropical Discovery. Here you will find the world's largest indoor Komodo Dragon exhibit. These giant creatures are the largest living lizards in the world, reaching up to 10 feet in length and weighing over 300 pounds. The dragons are an eerie sight and one of the last reminders of prehistoric times. The Tropical Discovery is also home to a large variety of snakes, reptiles and exotic fish.
The two most popular residents at the zoo are Natasha and Boris, two cute and furry polar bear cubs. These adorable critters immediately captured the hearts of the entire community. They can be found in a special exhibit area of Northern Shores swimming and lying around in the mile high sun without a care in the world. Expect to spend around 6 hours at the zoo to get a good look at all the animals.
