Located 20 minutes from downtown, the Coors Brewery in Golden is the largest single brewery in the entire world. Free tours are available to see the brewing and packaging areas of the facility. For many of us, our first glimpse of a Coors product was when Burt Reynolds was hauling it illegally over state lines in the movie Smoky and the Bandit. Here's your chance to see the brewery that inspired a classic.
Adolph Coors opened his brewery in 1873, three years before Colorado was even a state. Through hard work, and a little ingenuity during the prohibition period, Coors has become the third largest brewer in the world. In 1959, Coors became the first beverage company to use an all-aluminum can. It takes 55 days to brew, age and package a Coors beer, and in 1999 alone, the company purchased over $40 million dollars worth of premium barley to make their assortment of beers.
Although most Coloradoans are not fans of the Coors Light television commercials, they must be having a positive impact. Coors Light is currently the #4 selling beer in the United States. The brewery also produces Original Coors, Killians Irish Red, Zima, Keystone and Blue Moon.
Brewery tours take about 90 minutes and begin every 20 - 30 minutes. Visitors can see the malting process, the brewing and also the packaging of the end product. If you are over the age of 21, you will be offered complimentary samples in the Hospitality Lounge.
The tour ends at the Coors & Company Gift Shop, where those so inclined can purchase shirts, hats, gifts and other collectibles. Tour scripts are provided in Spanish, German, French and Japanese for those visitors who do not speak English.
