One of Colorado's most famous residents was Pony Express rider, army scout, buffalo hunter and carnival'preneur Buffalo Bill Cody. While he led an exciting and adventurous life, he is probably best remembered as the creator of the 'Wild West Show' extravaganza.

The Buffalo Bill Museum and grave is located about 30 minutes to the west of Denver perched atop scenic Lookout Mountain. The view of the city and the sprawling plains is impressive. Buffalo Bill asked to be buried there because of the time he spent on the mountain admiring the view.

Buffalo Bill was born William F. Cody in Iowa in 1846. "Buffalo" was the nickname given to him when he was a young man because of his uncanny skills as a buffalo hunter. He left home at the tender age of 11 to begin running cattle. From there his life reads like an action, fairy tale character from a well-thought-out novel, eventually reaching legendary status.

The museum has western art and firearms, Indian artifacts and several exhibits on Buffalo Bill's life and the Wild West Show, which toured all through Europe as well as North America. Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull, two legends in their own right, were also performers in the Wild West Show.

Attractions include the Children's Coral where kids can practice their ropin' skills. Several special events are planned throughout the year. There is also a gift shop in the museum selling books, souvenirs and toys - because every boy at some point wants to be a cowboy.
